In the Fight Against Breast Cancer, You Shouldn’t Also Have to Fight to Swallow Your Pain Pills

July 2021: “I’m sorry to have to tell you this, but your mother has breast cancer. It’s a very rare type of breast cancer and I suggest we start treatments immediately.”
August 2021: Mother undergoes double mastectomy.

This is how the past few months have gone for one of my coworker’s friends. Her friend’s life was jolted when she learned of her mother’s diagnosis. Nothing can prepare you for hearing that news, and nothing can prepare you for what happens next.

Her friend’s mother had her first chemo treatment and is already extremely sick and losing her hair. It’s hard for her to keep any food or water down and she has zero energy. The doctors are giving her medication through a shot to help, but it’s not taking away all the pain or nausea. She was told she could take Tylenol, but she can’t swallow it. Because of the treatments, her throat is sore and dry, and the pills are getting stuck causing her to choke, which makes her vomit because of the nausea. Her friend is desperate to help ease her mom’s pain, so she can swallow her pills.
